BELMONT DAY SCHOOLBelmont, Massachusetts
School campuses can be designed to offer an array of educational riches. The administrators at Belmont Day School took advantage of this opportunity to turn their campus into an outdoor classroom and playspace. Expansion to the school's buildings, parking lot, and athletic field expansion cut into a well-loved woodlot, challenging abutters' views, compromising surface drainage, and reducing previous outdoor classroom space. This project called for viewing design ideas through an environmental 'filter' direction of sun and wind, seasonal precipitation, soil type, site hydrology and geology, and native flora and fauna to balance aesthetic decisions with client goals and site function. These issues were addressed with aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating results, while improving the environmental sustainability of the campus.
