UNION PLACE, SOMERVILLE HOUSING GROUP
Somerville, Massachusetts

Union Place Housing Development is the first Planned Unit Development project for Somerville, MA. It includes a mix of uses such as housing, retail, office, structured parking, and open space. City and site requirements demanded creative solutions for melding public/private open spaces. Brownfield and hydrology challenges were solved with binding of soils, raised planters, runoff infiltration systems, and use of appropriate native plant species. The groundwater infiltration system has been plumbed to supply site irrigation water. Union Place utilizes surplus materials and specialized "green" products such as composite lumber for decking; remilled flooring; granite curbs, foundation blocks, and cobble. It is a certified Energy Star project.

Union Place is a phased project with a completion date of 2006. Phase One: Tremont St./Norfolk St. housing, was completed in 2004. Phase Two: structured parking, was also built in 2004. Phase Three: Flatiron building and adjacent park along Webster Avenue, is currently in construction.
